Write For Rights 2022 WRITE FOR RIGHTS Write a letter. Change a life.

How do I join Write for Rights?

You can take action online quickly, write handwritten letters on your own from the comfort of your home, join an existing event — or you can host your own event! Click here to find out how you can get involved.

P.S. We’re here to help. If you have any questions that aren't answered on this page, please contact the Write for Rights team at info@amnesty.org.nz

What is the main goal of Write for Rights?

The purpose of the Write for Rights is to mobilise millions of people globally around International Human Rights Day, December 10th. The main goal is to use the power of letter-writing to influence world leaders to protect individuals or communities whose human rights have been denied. This year we have ten cases from around the world that you can write letters for! Find out more about each of the cases here.

Who can participate?

Everyone! You don’t need to have previous experience with human rights or Amnesty International to participate. Amnesty welcomes all those who are keen to keep shining the light on human rights. Whether you plan to participate as a letter-writerevent organiserevent attendee or donor – you’ll be making a difference.

How can I participate?

On the "How to get involved" page you will have the choice of one or more of these options:

Does letter-writing work?

Yes, it does! Visit our "Success Stories" page for just a few examples. We’ve learned that it takes persistence. Some countries can be more responsive than others and some high profile prisoners of conscience face repeat arrests. Every single letter you write makes a difference. As we say, write a letter... change a life!

Who am I writing letters for?

Every year, Amnesty International identifies people and communities at risk of human rights abuses worldwide who urgently seek solidarity and justice. This year we’ve picked 10 cases where New Zealand-wide and global activism can make a huge difference, right now.

We write letters for the individuals and communities whose human rights are being abused. These letters are typically addressed to the authorities who have power to end the human rights abuses at hand.

All the information that you need concerning case background, content, letter-writing, and address are available on the Resources page.

You can choose to write a letter on any, some, or even all of the Write for Rights cases!

Where do I find advice on writing my letters?

Check out our Resources page!

Do I have to write on December 10th?

No you don't! Most people are planning to write on December 10th to mark Human Rights Day. However, we know that the end of year is a busy time so some events may take place earlier or later. We will be collecting letters until January 2022.

If I don’t register, can I still participate?

Of course! However, we strongly encourage you to register because it allows us to keep you in the loop and track the impact of Write for Rights participation across New Zealand! Registration is available online up until January 2022.

What language should I use to write my letters?

Write in any language in which you are fluent and feel most comfortable.

How many letters should I write?

We invite you to set your own letter-writing goal: one, five, ten or more letters. Each letter makes a difference, especially when we remember that thousands of people are also sending letters, emails and tweets around the world. No matter what you have time for, be sure to report your numbers on the feedback form in your profile so that yours can be added to the global total!

Don't have a profile yet? Head here to sign up to get involved in Write for Rights.

Can I keep writing letters for Amnesty after Write for Rights?

Absolutely! Thousands of New Zealanders are members of our Rapid Response Network. This dynamic network allows members to receive an appeal from Amnesty as frequently as they choose and on the type of human rights issues that interest them. For example, you could ask to receive one appeal per month for women at risk, about threats of torture or about the death penalty.

I'd love to get more involved in Amnesty's work, how can I do that?

There are so many ways to get involved in Amnesty's work. The best thing you could do would be to join our Amnesty Community

Through online campaigning, organising events, lobbying politicians, writing letters and mobilising people, the Amnesty Community made up of individuals and local groups is a powerful force to promote human rights and advocate for change.

If this sounds like you, we’d be honoured to have you sign up as an Amnesty Advocate – someone who takes action on a regular basis.

How do I organise my event?

Information & resources on organising an event can be found here

Also, check out this awesome video for some tips:

Where can I organise an event?

You can organise a virtual event, an event with your household, community or a public event on a beach or at a park! We’re always excited to hear about new events across New Zealand. So, why not host your own event!

What kinds of resources are available to publicise my event?

We have posters, and social media graphics etc. all on our Resources page. There is also information on how to promote your event on Eventbrite or Facebook.

Once you've created your event, the best thing to do would be to email the link to this website to all of your friends and family or people in your network who you'd like to attend your event. They can then register to attend your event on the Events page!

If you want to spread the word further, there is also information on how to promote your event on Eventbrite or Facebook...everything you need to publicise and organise your event can be downloaded from the Resources page.

How do I find all the materials I want for my event?

There are case materials, letter-writing materials and event-hosting materials all on this Resources page. Can't find what you're looking for? Email info@amnesty.org.nz for any questions that haven't been answered here.

Do I have to register my event online?

Yes! It is strongly preferred from our end that you register online. Your event will automatically be entered on our event website. It’s a great tool to help you organise and allows you to be linked with all the other Write for Rights events.

Registering for Write for Rights is your pledge to participate in the event. It also gives us an indication of how many people are planning on participating and how many letters were written during the campaign.

If you’re having trouble with anything or have any questions, just contact the team at info@amnesty.org.nz - we'll get you sorted!
